- VBTS(Village Base Station):
Almost half of the world currently have limited access to cellular networks. Many rural areas does not have GSM coverage. Conventional cellular operators refrain from covering sparsely populated areas, as the cellular equipment is expensive, and they offer low or no profits.
We propose VBTS (Village Base Station) a low cost GSM cellular equipment. Some of its main characteristics are as follows:
- Low-cost, Low-power, sustainable network equipment (Solar/wind power compatible).
- Provide 2.5G (call, sms) cellular services.
- Open source software/hardware stack (allows customizations)
- RBTS(Rescue Base station):
The Rescue Base Station (RBS) is a drop-in, solar power compatible, open-source GSM communication system for the scenarios where a large-scale calamity disrupts traditional modes of communication. The system operates using asynchronously connected autonomous nodes and gathers useful information from users, eventually synchronizing this data across the network using distributed network protocols. It connects people through conventional GSM services allowing calls, SMS and smart phone features when available. The networks also provides a series of services for use during a disaster, such as:
- An attribute based search on different characteristics (name, occupation and blood group),
- Voicemail services,
- SMS broadcast alerts, and
- Emergency dialup services, through which a victim can contact available doctors, fire fighters, police and rescue workers.
iHealth is an automated and live early warning system for disease outbreaks and is capable of detecting outbreaks efficiently. This system is designed on some of the well tested algorithms of disease epidemiology. These algorithms have the capacity to handle seasonal trends and adapt to changes in regular number of patients due to any disaster or unrest.
The algorithms are currently running on the data of Muzaffargarh district that was obtained during the floods of 2010. The system raises an alert even if one of the health centers, in a district, starts to report extra cases than usual. The affected areas are displayed on a map in the form of clusters. These clusters keep growing as more and more health centers, in an area, starts to report disastrous increase of patient cases. This shows the spread of disease in a very good geographical form.
FluBreaks converts Google Flu Trends data into an early epidemic detection system by using sophisticated statistical analysis. Flubreaks combines the best of both rapid response and historical analysis algorithms. It provides an insight on how the flu epidemic is developing at a Region, State and city wise level in United States. We have published this work in JMIR. - Dengue Intensity Characterization:
We used various data mining techniques and used them to extract relevant information from online news articles scraped from the top news websites of Pakistan. These articles were used to characterize the intensity to dengue using machine learning techniques.
First support vector machine was used to classify the articles as relevant and non-relevant to dengue. Further the related articles are fed to a complex feature extraction engine to extract significant features. Spatio-temporal analysis is done by running regression models on the extracted features to quantify dengue intensity. We published the results of this study in ACM DEV 2013. Entertainment has recently been shown to be a powerful motivator for mastering new technologies. We therefore set out to use viral entertainment to introduce telephone-based, speech-based services to low-literate people in the developing countries. We describe Polly, a simple voice manipulation and forwarding system that went viral in Pakistan last year. Seeded once by 32 low-skilled workers in a Pakistani university, in 3 weeks Polly amassed 2,032 users and 10,629 interactions. From analyzing the traffic and its content, it is evident that Polly has been used extensively for entertainment and social contact, but it has also been put to an unintended use as a voicemail and group messaging facility. This demonstrated the potential for speech based services, and the pent-up demand for entertainment, among our target population. Also of note, Polly‚Äôs viral spread crossed gender and age boundaries and even established itself in a female population. However, it appears not to have crossed socioeconomic boundaries.
